If you transferred 10 gigs in 24 minutes to your USB hard drive, I would definitely think that it was going using USB 2.0 protocol. Additionally, when you connect a high speed USB 2.0 device to a USB 1.1 port or a USB 2.0 port w/o drivers installed such that it is using native USB 1.1 support, there will be a notification in your system tray saying that you are using a high speed device in a slower port. This happened to me when I built my system and installed Windows but not yet SP1 which enables USB 2.0 support.
