Both computers will be able to simultaneously access the net. The router will take the IP address that your ISP assigns to you, and provide internal IPs to your machines behind it, however many they are.

For surfing and downloading and such, both of your machines can do that stuff simultaneously with no problems at all. The only thing that probably won't be able to occur is the seamless playing of bandwidth intensive 3D games simultaneously. For instance I have three machines here for the summer, and my brother and I can both surf and download and such with no problems. We can't both play Unreal online at the same time, though.

Basically the router becomes a server that distributes bandwidth to your computers. It's a standalone device, and as long as it's turned on and plugged in your computers will have a net connection.
