It was not only a guess. The repair always worked for me.
Well, if you don't want to repair, then do a full installation of XP over itself.
I don't know of anything quicker, but by the time you've found something else you'd have completed the two installs, so if you don't have time, then I'd do the two installs rather than waiting. Your PC will be up and running quicker.
