MP3's and Linux

I am having problems playing mp3's in Linux. The CD-R w/ the mp3's on it was burned on another puter, under a different OS. I am getting an error saying: Please Check That:
1.You have the correct output plug-in selected.
2.No other programs are blocking the soundcard.
3.Your soundcard is configured properly.

Now, I can play a regular CD through the CD Player prog. But, if I use KDE Media Player, it crashes. And, if I use XMMS, I get the above error. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
