The Jet Direct boxes have parallel printer ports on them (some are 3-port, others 1). There is a single ethernet connection to the box, then the parallel cable(s) runs from this box to the printer. It is this box that has to be assigned the IP number, not the printers.

I'm going to try Loopback's instructions. I knew there was a way of resetting to the defaults, but couldn't remember how.
