It's really not quite as you guys are thinking. The processer has way more things to do than just read and write to memory, so it is good that is is essentially clocked faster than the memory, also everything rides the bus so thats why there are buffers to hold the overflow of data. Your system was not locking up just cause you only had PC100 memory. Ther are many many more issues going on inside your PC other than just processor and memory..
