That's where a preamp comes in. Unless you have a receiver with a phono input and a line-out and your turntable doesn't have a line-out you will need a preamp. Most of the turntables I have seen needed a grounded phono input. I know mine does. Urban Earth, I'm assuming, that since you are a self proclaimed "vinyl dinosaur" that you have a reciever with a phono input.
