Which OS and which email program?
Outlook Express - you can try exporting your address book and all of your messages. The export usually works for the address book but about half the time won't work for the messages.
Windows 2000 with OE - look for a folder in Documents and Settings/Your Username/Local Settings/Application Data/Identies (make sure that your system is setup to show hidden files). Save this folder to a CD or somewhere else on your HD that won't be formatted. Once you have reloaded your OS, open up OE, click File/Import/Messages/Outlook Express 5/ Highlight Main Identity, click OK, Click Browse, go to the location of your old identity and it will import messages and folders but not rules.
Windows 98/ME with OE are similar. The identity file is just in a different location.

You can also do a search for a file that ends with .wab. This will hold your address book.
