USB to me is still problematic.
For around $100 you can get a refurbished HP narrow SCSI scanner (6200cse) (Refurbed by HP) and for $57.00 you can get the ADVANSYS SCSI card for it. With this set up you can scan an 8x10 Photo in under 15 seconds with no noise instead of a couple of minutes with the USB.
