Removing the HS is definetely your best bet like doctorgonzo said.

A friend of mine swapped his board when it died for a replacement of the same kind. he took out the heatsink with the cpu still stuck on the bottom, left it in an antistatic bag for a couple days, then just stuck it right back in. of course you can almost see NOTHING this way, especially if you have a larger heatsink, and as doctor said its very easy to bend those pins. I wouldn't recommend this.
