some Euro telephone lines have higher bandwidth than their US equivalents:
a T1 in the US is 1.54mbps, the equivalent line in Europe, called an E1, is 2.08mbps. So line for line, the Europeans have approx 25% more bandwidth than a provider in the US.
Europe is far ahead the US when it comes to overall broadband connection and costs...Bush has been pushing for this in both of his terms, but this initiative has not gotten a lot of play due to the war in Iraq and other, most journalistically juicy, tidbits..
