On Monday the Apple Store ...

I have an unconscionably early Monday meeting but it's going to be over by 10:30 AM.
It's a 15 minute walk to that new Apple store over by Lincoln Center and I haven't gotten my hands on an iPad yet.

Hmmmnnn

Anything you guys really want to know ?

Yes, it's coaster-ability, i.e. how many glasses of beer can I fit on one?

I think Stephen Colbert and David Letterman already beat you to that one : http://www.appleinsider.com/articles..._night_tv.html

How can I be sure it will not fly away and do I need a bird cage for it?

Does it have an iPhone, a Ginsu knife set, a Bass-O-Matic fishing pole and an iBarbecue built into it yet? Surely if you cannot catch fish with it, clean them, grill them and tell your friend about the big one that got away then its of no value.

This is being typed from an iPad in the Apple store.
It's a beautiful gadget but I can't justify getting one yet.

I bought one, and I am impressed. I can type about 40-45 words per minute on the horizontal view (I normally type 55-60 wpm). After I get used to it more I will be about 50 WPM. The battery life is just amazing! 10 hours of battery life must be play HD video games all 10 hours. My casual use with playing some videos will be about 15-20 hours of use, just amazed by that. The e-mail function is great, I can actually delete, move, and organize e-mails much faster then a typical browser. I am also impressed with the speakers on the unit.

I still haven't used the iPad for the real reason I got it, to show presentations and videos for my classes. However, the elements app is amazing!!!!!! I will use this in my classroom when I talk about matter and it will leave students in a trance

I think the size is perfect, any bigger and you couldn't use it as nice on the couch or in bed. Any smaller and my typing speed you dramtically decrease. Before you bash this product go to the Apple store and play with it. It replaces my laptop for all my needs and actually outperforms my laptop for these specific needs. By the way, it is lightening fast.

Cleared cookies, cleared all History in fact, and of course logged out.

It really is a sweet gadget just now but it won't stay that way for long, it's got "potential" written all over it.
So I won't be buying one this year but when my Touch finally goes to its just reward (I love the thing!) the iPad will be the logical replacement ( Yeah I know it won't fit in a pocket but I'm one of those NY women with a shoulder bag large enough to carry supplies for an EMT. ).
The weight just isn't that big a deal. I mean I've had text books that weighed more than 1.5 lbs.

Just to clear this up, you can watch 720p video on it though I admit that "The Mall Cop" wasn't anything I would have chosen.
Youtube videos are dicey, I checked out a few No Reservations episodes since they come in the Youtube version of HD as well and they were tolerable but others were just a smeared mess, same as usual.
You definitely can't use the iPad in full sunlight, a glass cube store made that very clear, but a bit of shade and you're good to go.

Typing on the thing, after the first few tries to get the hang of it, was no problem so take any cries about the awfulness of the touch screen keyboard with a large grain of salt..
No you won't break any speed records but it's just not a real problem for day to day stuff.
If you've got a major paper use the desktop/notebook you bought the iPad to supplement.

In a noisy Apple store, with other music playing, it was impossible for me to judge the speaker's audio and I'd left the Sennheisers back in the office (bummer.) so I couldn't use them through the headphone jack.

Web surfing was swift and sure you'll have no problems there.

If only you could use the thing for HULU!!!
Oh well, I live in hope.
I mean there'll be "an app for that", right ?

I'm not sure it will replace a dedicated ebook reader but I'll hold off on that till I get a chance to read more than a few pages of text at a time.

That's it for now but I intend to go back to Apple store and continue my "investigations".

That's so much more rational than the reports I've seen of people who stood in line, bought, and then said to the interviewers, "I'll have to figure out what I'm going to use it for."

(Maybe to pound some sense into your head?)

Some feedback that I saw coming from the moment the device was announced:

Good choice Pam. Wait for the second or third version with more and better features, fewer irritations and a lower price. This always happens with newly released Apple hardware. I'm feeling the same way as you about purchasing one.

My wife loves her ipad, which we bought about 3 weeks ago for 480, but I sure wish we waited cause now that the ipad 2 is available I am seeing the original ipad for 390.

How many times now has the second version of something Apple makes been significantly better? Never buy the first version of anything from Apple.
