ClamXav is one free one available. It's based on ClamAV in the linux world. ClamXav
I can't vouch for detection capabilities or the impact it may have on performance, as I haven't used it myself.

Crying wolf? Apple support forums confirm malware explosion | ZDNet
You've been warned.. I'm not using anything at the moment, however I have a trial copy of a piece of software from apple and that never shows up anything. With the security features around the Mac OSX its quite difficult for malware and virus' to install (having to enter your password when installing apps is an example) However that "MacShield" infection downloads itself with other programs and installs itself into your apps folder and just runs itself - its pretty harmless, but does bring a lot of pop-ups of porn etc. |

With Macs, most of the problem is spyware, rather than viruses. That's why I stopped using Safari and started using FF with Ghostery. I like Safari better, but I'd rather browse the Net more safely.
I knew it was only a matter of time for the baddies to start coding for Mac, as the platform has gained in popularity it has become a target. Anon we'll be seeing malware in iOS. I don't think a panic is justified either. For now it's enough to just keep an eye out for any suspicious behaviour, check regularly the Apps folder for things that didn't come with the OS nor were they installed by the user, and keep tabs on memory usage and running applications. Any app can be killed relatively easy. |

I agree - however with the Mac community becoming larger and the average idiot getting their hands on Mac its inevitable that this will happen.
It saddens me a little bit. The advantage over Windows is the ability for Mac to close down holes quicker and stamp out malware / virus's quicker. It just annoys me that people have to write them "for fun" and there is nothing fun about it. |

ESET NOD32 for Mac. I don't have a mac but if I did I would use it. I have it for my PCs. I pay for it though.

Avast came out with a Mac version sometime back, I was using that with Lion when i was using it and it actually did pick up a few things for me. Now that i downgraded to Snow Leopard, i still have it, but I haven't had any issues with the OS thus far.

I recently noticed an antivirus solution by norton has gone straight to the top of the free rankings on the Mac app store. Not sure if it's a Windows-style real time scanner or just an on-demand kind of thing, but it's interesting that a lot of mac users have felt the need to install it.

I have worked on 33 PC's this month that were infected. Not one was a Mac. I am not saying they can not get infected but in the 20 years I have been doing this, I have never had a Mac come in infected. They are probably the best retail and artist systems on the market from a hardware, stability, and performance standpoint. I can build a great workstation or web surfer better than Apple but as soon as I put Windows on it, all bets are off from a consumer perspective.
