iOS 6.1 ...

The update was no trouble.
It remains to be seen if it "fixes" home sharing, finally.

So Apple does not make you buy all new apps/software for their phone when they get a new OS like they do with their computers?

Nope and Home Sharing is back to working properly for me (Will the next update break it agin? Stay tuned!).
