I am paying AU$25 (possibly US$18) for a 256/64kbps ADSL connection. I opted not to buy one of their over priced modems (over AU$100) when i could buy one for AU$30 elsewhere. However the taskbar icon for my Alcatel Speedtouch modem rates my speed at 1.5mbps/64kbps and so does the Windows Networking dialog. Is this a result of them not being able to "shape" my connection by not having my modem, or something else?

Any Ideas.

actually ADSL is not sharing the connection like Cable.

You have a deicated line back to the CO.

Alcatel Speed touch? USB or Ethernet? Both are good modems.

Have you run any speed tests,
www.pcpitstop.com or www.dslreports.com

ADSL is provisioned at the CO, they place any caps they want in one of 2 places. At the CO or the Network Level.

1 they can cap you at the network level on your user name. Set your User name to not be able to transfer data above set levels.
2. They can cap you at the CO.
3. they can put caps in both places.

Sounds like your Line is caped at the 1.5 by 64, so they have probably capped your speed at the Network Level on the user name at or around 256/64

run several speed tests to find an average.

It's an internal modem...and i've checked their website as to the billing details etc. and they seem to think im on 256kbps. I'll run Speedtests to check.
What does "CO" refer to?

If the Windows Networking dialog is saying 1.5mbps, is this accurate. Im not refering to varying speed changes, but in general. When I was on Dial Up it would tell me if i was at 48.8k or 56k or anywhere in between as it fluctuated.
Whats more, im getting download speeds of 90-150kbps in Internet Explorer.

90 to 150 kbps or kBps? My DSL connection is reporting 10Mbps because that's the speed of my nic.

If you are getting 90 to 150 kBps, that's indicative of a connection approaching 1.5M. This will download approximately 5 to 8 megabytes per minute.

Just something related to this - I have 600k/750k, supposed to be upgraded soon. Windows reports it as 10Mbps and at off-peak times I can reach 200-300kbps downloading things. But i'm on cable, and is this normal?
