Mic input going astray ???

recently my mic wasn't working, after working fine for ages.
(I use it on internet phone for example)

Anyway, I found it to be muted (for some reason) and unchecked that.
But now, the mic seems to go straight to the speakers, and nothing gets to the application.

This has me stumped...

You want the mic muted so it won't go through the speakers, that's what the mute is for (your end not theirs). The mic should still work with it muted :)
