AGP -----> PCI-X = More money spent

With the possibility of pci-x mobo's whats the opinion on whats going to happen. My situation is that i'm going to build a new comp around august (hopefully after the price cuts), with the upcoming 939 sockets(at decent prices) or LGA from intel, alternatively i could plan on using a fairly cheap mobo and processor for about a year then upgrade, but if I do that i'll be left with a AGP graphics (such as 9800 pro). what chance have I got that it will work on future mobo's. will there be pci-x and AGP on the same board??
What about some sort of adapter, (don't laugh)
Hope that ain't to complicated, and if i could put off the build i would but need it for UNI starting Sep

I do think it would be possible to work the AGP 8X card into the PCI Express Motherboard somehow - after all, AGP 1X are still able to run on the newer models and so are ordinary PCI Graphics Cards. Of course, the newer ATI cards, like the X300 and X500, will probably have bus speeds and stuff that are lower than the 9800 Pro but will run faster because the bandwidth transmission allowed between the graphics card and the main system, the motherboard, will be far greater. In that sense, if wouldn't be a bad idea, since that card will still be able to compete in graphics capability.

Build now with "sweet spot" components, not cutting edge, save some big bucks, and enjoy it as long as you can.

Sweet spot right now is a 2.8C/2800+, and video card dependent on just how serious you game - anything between a 9550/9600SE and a 9800 Pro. Anything over a 9800 Pro isn't worth the bucks.

From what ive read the motherboards that will have PCI-xpress will also have an agp slot because they know it will be hard to make the switch and the many users are using agp cards.

I faced the same questions when building this computer. Do I wait for PCI-X, BTX mobo's, 64 bit Windows and processors?

I finally decided to just build what I wanted to. There will always be new stuff on the horizon. Besides.....it's a good excuse to build another next year!

Echo nocturnx- everything I have read says the first boards will keep an AGP slot.

Echo glc- His advice is probably the best approach.

Yes initially the boards will have both PCI-Express (you really didn't mean PCI-X did you ?) and AGP slots. . . just like old boards still had ISA slots after PCI came in.

The reason why he points that out I think is because there actually is both a PCI-Express and PCI-X which are two different things. Im waiting for PCI-express and BTX to come out before I start building a new rig myself.
