my new speakers weren't working after a few months for some reason so i decided to uninstall the audio drivers, and now i have no idea how to reinstall them again. im not sure what soundcard i even have cuz its an old 400mhz dell. just would like to know how to get audio working? isn't there some way to just download some drivers and put them on a disk and then that would work? not sure what to do. thanks.

Open up the case and remove the soundcard, should have the manufacturers name printed on the board and the model.
That way you can go to their webiste and download the drivers (and know you're getting the right ones).
Post the manufacturer and model of the card, like i said should be printed on it.

There is no need to open up the case. Just download and install Everest (http://www.lavalys.com/index.php?page=product&view=1) (formerly Aida32). It will tell you what your sound card is. If it's an old Dell it may well be onboard and in that case you would have to get the drivers from Dell.

i ran that everest program and it said:
Multimedia:
Audio Adapter Aureal Montego Sound Card
doesn't get any more detailed than that. don't they usually have drivers on the win98 cd?

Go to the Dell site. There should be a way to type in the model number and find the correct drivers.
What version of Windows do you need drivers for?
That's a Turtle Beach Montego card. There are several versions of it, you need to go to support.dell.com and enter your service tag number to find them. If you still have the Dell Resource CD that came with the machine, they are on there.
Do note that Aureal was bought out by Creative and no drivers were ever developed for any version of Windows newer than 98.
