DDCD?

Has anybody heard of or has more info about this new Double Density CD standard?

All I could find was that it can store 1.3 gb on a single cd.
I presume that you will also need a special cd rom to read it.

If they can make is to new DDCDs can be read by "old" (in respect to the DDCD) CD-ROM Drives...I'll be very happy. I doubt that will actually happen.

I will certainly by a DDCD-RW when they come out, and if they come out and prove better (or cheaper) than DVD-RWs

Here are the problems I see DDCD. First, the technology is only backed by a few manufactuers. Second, there are no standards in place. I see DDCD as being in the same boat as DCC (Digital Compact Cassette) in the audio industry. Looks great on paper, but competing technology is already inplace is being accepted in the general market. Remember the SuperDisk?? 3.5 inch standard floppy that holds 120Meg. And it's backwards compatable with 1.44Meg floppies. Great concept, but it hit the market at the same time as ZIP/JAZ drives and when CD-RW's were being introduced.

It took awhile, but DVD now has standards for all DVD formats and it's supported by every major manufactuer of hardware. The other issue is media. Using the same basic media, DVD is by far cheaper in terms of pure capacity. Granted, there are a few DVD-RW's on the market. Panasonic started it with the DVD-RAM-- but it does not support 'standard' DVD formats. Pioneer is leading the way in standards with their DVD-RW technology. And then there is Sony and Philips with their PC+RW (formaly DVD+RW) which looks very promising and expands on the Pioneer technology but will include every standard written by the DVD-forum.

i certainly hope it doesn't catch hold. i've been waitng for dvd-ram drives to become affordible, and they're almost there. if this DDCD catches on, it will only be temporary. But that temporary supression of demand for the dvd-ram will delay the scale of up of dvd-ram's production, and the resultant price decrease.

I don't believe the DDCD will have much future.
I remember a few years ago, how expensive CD-R and RWs were, and also the burners.
And now ? Nearly everyone has a burner, even many PCs are sold with them.

That will happen to the DVD, too. Just as at the CD beginning (only Music-CDs, and Data-CDs) we have DVD-Video and Data DVD (and also DVD-Audio).
There also are DVD-R (only DVD-5, but. . well, we are at the beginning). DVD-RAM is still fighting with DVD-RW and DVD+RW, but I think finally the DVD-RW (or +RW) will win because they can be read in normal DVD drives - unlike the DVD-RAM thing.

When DVD-burners get cheaper, better, one can forget the DDCD. The DVD-5 holds far more data than it (4.7 GB compared to 1.3). And then they'll come dual layered DVD-R and RW (9.4 GB).

I believe the DVD will develop too fast to give the DDCD the chance to become a standard.

I also think that if they were compatible with normal cd roms it would probably catch on. If not then dvd would be my choice. Just let it evolve a liite more.
