I'd like to start off my review by saying that this is the first optical mouse I have ever owned. As a fairly hardcore gamer I am loathe to trust anything without a cord and ball. Well, I finally caved and bought an MX510 from Logitech after hearing so many good reviews.
Ergonomics: A very important category, especially if you plan on playing for 10 or more hours.
The first thing I noticed when I opened my new mouse is that it had a very "ergonomic" looking design, and my eyes did not deceive. This mouse is the single most comfortable mouse I have ever layed my hand on. From the left and right mouse buttons which seemlessly integrate with the plastic of the rest of the mouse to the exceptioinally well placed buttons, this mouse just feels right. The only complaint I have is that one button, the application switch button, is a bit too far under where I normally place my hand.
9.5/10
Looks:
The MX510 once again delivers. The semitransparent/reflective coating covering a wavy blue undertone is very cool looking. This category really isn't that important because you have your hand over the mouse most of the time, but it never hurts to have a bit of style.
9/10
Function: This is the area in which the MX510 falters a bit. Having come from a ball mouse, which is notoriously more accurate, I can say that the MX510 is not as accurate as my last mouse. Unfortunately I have no basis for comparison because I have never owned another optical mouse, but from what I have used at friends houses and at school, this mouse is heads and shoulders above its optical bretheren. That being said, the slight lapse in accuracy occasionally and the occasional quick jumps and stuttering between two pixels is not the end of the world. In fact, 95% of people will probably not notice.
6/10
Conclusion: While the MX510 may not be quite as accurate as a mouse with a ball, I will be using it from this point forward. It is simply better in every other way and the difference in accuracy is small. I would recommend this mouse to anyone who has $50 to spend on a new mouse.
Final Score: 8/10 (Not an average)
(Note: My grading scale is as such:
1-3: Do not buy
4/5:Buy if you have a good reason to, but does not necessarily stand on its own merits
6-9:Worth the money with 9 being a very good buy
10:Absolute perfection in every way, worth twice what you pay for it )
