I'm new to the board here. I scanned the other no dial tone error messages but they didn't really help me.

I have a client that had a lightening strike nearby. They couldn't connect to the Internet after that. They got the no dial tone error message. I replaced their modem with a US Robotics 56K Internal Faxmodem PCI and it worked great. They said it even worked better than their last one did before the storm. This lasted for a whole 3 hours. They had shut down the computer, left and come back, and turned the PC back on again. Now they are getting the no dial tone error again. I talked them through checking the settings over the phone and everything sounds like it is still set up okay. They tried a phone on the line and that works. If they plug the phone into the phone jack on the modem, there is no dialtone. I have to go back tomorrow so I wanted to see if any of you have ideas on this. Thanks.

hmm.
I'd say this is a hardware error with either the m0b0 or the power supply.
check if the modem works on another pc. if it doesn't then
there is prolly something burned out.
so be carefull, u might comprimise good hardware with a broken m0b0/power supply

That's what I was sort of thinking but hoping it was something else. Question though....if the modem is actually burned out should there still be a dial tone going through the modem to the phone jack. Isn't that just sort of a jumper across.

burned out hardware is very unreliable and u can't be sure of anything.

***note
i could be wrong about the burnout but a lightning strike

Yeah....I dreaded working on this machine once they said lightning. Thanks BambiX for your input.

Whew........had them double check the phone connections to the modem. It turns out someone else had unplugged it and when they plugged it back in they put it in the wrong port. They originally thought no one had had touched the PC.
