I just built a system not too long ago and I got a DVD rom to have as my primary drive. I just jumped on a deal for the NEC DVD burner. What I want to know is if I would really need both drives in the system of if the burner alone would be enough? I can't imagine I would ever do any on the fly copying of cd's or DVD's.

Is there any reason I would need both drives? I would much rather just replace my DVD rom with the burner and be done with it.

Any suggestions and recommendations as to whether it would actually be useful to have both drives installed?

Thanks!

You can do whatever you want. You don't NEED a seperate DVD-ROM but if you want to keep it in there you can. If you do keep it just make sure you jumper them correctly.

The extra -ROM drive was a recommendation because of the wear and tear of the drive.
It's better to wear out a cheap DVD-ROM than an expensive burner.
But with the low prices of burners nowadays it really doesn't matter anymore, and the burner will last very long anyway.

There does not seem to be any reason to get rid of the DVD-ROM. Use the burner for burning and the ROM for everything else, should prolong the life of both.
