maxtor 80 install questions

I've already installed maxtor drive as slave and have existing wd120 as master(set jumper plugs to that config) I use maxtor 3 software to format new hd and its done in about 20 seconds (sound strange- too quick?) Now, I open my computer and go to copy file from c:(master hd) to f:(slave drive) and get message "do I want to format f: now?" I thought it was already formatted by maxtor. Any way, I click yes, format and windows proceeds to format f:. But, right at the end of formatting I get another message saying "windows was unable to complete format". I'm perpllexed! I try again, same thing....It (f: hd) shows up on "my computer" first page like everything is okay. I searched for new drivers but windows xp home says I got the latest available. I know that master hd is ntfs but not sure about maxtor. It might be fat32. Does that matter? Please advise soon. thanks

I had a very similar problem, however I was trying to format it through Partition Magic 7. My solution was that I had to turn off System Restore.

You might as well give it a shot and see if it works.

I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think you can transfer data between drives if one is NTFS and the other is FAT32. Can someone confirm? However, if you format it through Windows XP I think it automatically formats into a NTFS.

why dont u just go command prompt, and make sure that drive u need to format by checking it by key in dir, after that just type 'format f:' if the maxtor is in f drive.

If you have one drive (e.g. C: ) as NTFS and another drive (e.g. D: ) as FAT32 yes, you can transfer data between them.

Use XP's Disk Management to partition and format the drive, not Maxtor's software. Use Maxtor's software to zero fill (low level format) the drive and start over. Disk Management is found by right clicking on My Computer and selecting Manage.

If you are using an 80 wire Ultra ATA cable, you should not be using master/slave jumpering, you should be using Cable Select. Blue connector to motherboard, black on the other end to master, and gray in the middle to slave.
