Hi all,

I had an infected drive 1 month ago. Ended it having it backed up by the computer technician. Whilst it was being serviced, I changed the mother board and increased the RAM. Now I cant access the files (files appear in symbols). Is there a converter?

Wait, you said that you had the files backed up but then you couldn't access it? What were the files backed up from HDD and what onto? It it were like a normal storage device, like a CD-R or something, then reformat the HDD, reinstall the OS, and get the data back on. I'm not quite sure what your trouble is here.

The files were backed up onto a hard-drive prior to change of motherboard. It was backed up onto a hard drive. I've since tried to access that hard drive, but same thing happens. The technician said it was because the motherboard is different.

By 'files', are you referring to saved info like pictures, music, word documents, etc or go you mean programs? If the swap has already been done, has the operating system been reinstalled? Regardless of the mobo swap, you should be able to see data files on the backed up hard drive but not programs. I'm also assuming you have another hard drive that is now your Master and has the os on it. If so, you can add you old hard drive as a Slave (or jumper both to Cable Select) and you'll be able to 'see' your files.

I think that maybe you should post your specs and thoroughly describe your problem. Are you saying that your data was put onto a different hard drive than the original one that was in your system? Is this your only hard drive now?

Srry, was being vague. I meant saved excel and word files. Problem is I no longer have the technician's drive. The backed up files were recopied onto my drive (which had to be reformated). The technician gave me a XP pro corporate edition (as opposed to my previous XP pro). Thanks for your interest.

system specs: asus p4p800 deluxe mobo, 2G cosair RAM, asus radeon 9800XT, 3.06 Ghz P4, western digital 7200rpm 80G HD (8Mb buffer).

I think you need to talk to your technician.

The backed up files were recopied onto my drive (which had to be reformated).
If you reformated the drive with the files on it then you erased the files.

So... The technician put a backup of your files onto another hard drive, then formatted your drive, installed XP pro corporate and then put your files back onto your original drive?
Is that correct?

Is that now the only hard drive in the system?

I am assuming that you get into Windows ok?

Please post your specs, detailing the model numbers of motherboard, hard drive etc.

Could the fact that i passworded the windows as administrator got anything to do with not being able to access it?

Perhaps you need to be more clear about what you mean by "can't access."

Does the computer recognize all the drives? How many drives do you have? Can you get into Windows? Can you see your files?

The file can be opened, but is in mumble jumble symbols.

So the drive is recognized, it shows up as drive D: or E: or whatever, you can see files and folders on it, but when you open "MyFile.txt" it's not what it is supposed to be? What file are you trying to open? An executable, a Word document, or what?

You may have to reinstall Office. It sounds like the data is there but the correct programs aren't opening the files.

Have just reinstalled office and even XP. The files remain mumble jumble. HAs it got to do with me setting up passwords as administrator previously?
