DVD R/RW Question

Looking to buy a burner for myself as a Father Day gift from my kids. Which is considered a good buy for the dollar. I realize they will go up from 8x to higher later on, so I don't want to spend a fortune. From past experience I have used Lite-on which I have two drives already. So is it wise to stick with them on this or someone else.

LiteOn is a very good brand. Other good ones are NEC and LG. But whichever you choose, I'd recommend one that is capable of burning to a dual layer DVD+R as they're new.

That'd be LiteOn 832, NEC 2510 and LG 4120B.

As for the speeds, DVD tops out at 16x, and the difference to 8x is not much different. It'd be 2 or 3 minutes I believe, so 8x speed is pretty good, you can burn a single layer DVD in 8 minutes.
A dual layer DVD however takes 45 minutes as they're burned at 2.4x only.

If you don't want DL, then you can also get earlier models, which are cheaper, like the LiteOn 812. They're mostly 4x, though.

Sorry, I disagree with the Sony DRU 700 being a good choice. Folks, remember, Sony does not produce drives anymore. The Sony DRU 700 is nothing else than a rebadged LiteOn 832. Sure LiteOn is good, but the Sony is overpriced. You can get the original (LiteOn 832) for much cheaper. The LiteOn 832 costs about $150.

I don't know why so many of you recommend the Sony drives. Their drives are not theirs, and much more expensive than the original.

Sorry, had no idea it was the same drive. But are you recommending the LiteOn 832? If you are isn't that the same as recommending the sony other than price?.

Yes, it is indeed the same as the Sony, and just the price (and probably the software) is the difference.
My point is, why to spend $50 more to a clone, if you can get the same drive, the original, for that $50 less ?

Ok, you didn't know about it. But now that you know, I'm sure you would also get the original drive and save $50.

I suppose one could argue that Sony bundles a more complete software package with their burners, but yes, knowing now what i know I would get the LiteOn branded drive.
