I have a windows 98 PC, with an internal 3com 5609 var 20 (PCI). I had to reinstall Windows, and now I canīt configure the modem. I tried with the instalation disk and windows does not recongize any modem. I downloaded the drivers from 3com and nothing happens with the new driver also.

By the way, I bought the modem for $89. Searching in the Internet at a friendīs house, I saw the same modem (3cp5609) being sold for as much as $1.800. Is that right or Iīm going mad out of Internet abstinency?

Any help will be highly appreciated.

Look in device manager - for something like a PCI Communications Device or a PCI Serial Device. If you find one, open its properties and use the Change Driver button and feed it your driver disk.

Have you tried reseating the modem in the PCI slot?

I finally got my 3com modem working. First I installed a 3com sporster 33,6Kbps PNP modem in com3. After deinstalling it, I could install my 3com 56K. I donīt have any idea of what happened. Now it is working.

BTW, it is listed as installed in com5 and I canīt see any com5 port in Control Panel/System. As a matter of fact, there are only com1 and com2 listed.

Is that right? I thought that I will be able to see at least com3 and com4. How can the modem be atached to a non-listed port? How can I change that port settings if I canīt see it in the Control Panel?

TIA

I believe Com5 is a virtual port, only com 1 and 2 exist physically (as you could tell by looking at the outside of you pc.) HTH

I would uninstall the modem, and remove COM 2 from device manager, then reboot, go into CMOS, and disable COM 2. Then restart and reinstall the modem - and it should install itself as COM 2. Plug and play modems are their own ports.
