Just wondering firstly whats the huge list of programs that loads with windows. When I have to scan disk and defrag I have to ctrl alt delete and turn off a huge list of progs but I have no idea what half of them are. Does anyone know how to stop them starting or why they are there at all??
Secondly when the Pc loads my WinME on start up I have another list of programs in the task bar which I don't need how do I turn them off/???

There are two sites that have often-recommended lists for just this sort of problem: pacs-portal.co.uk and answersthatwork.com [the pacs-portal detailed startup list now actually resides at sysopt.com]. I'd recommend that you start at the pacs-portal page that explains the whole situation in a clear, straightforward way - and then head over to the lists to see what processes are up to what.
For pacs-portal, start at http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_index.htm
For answersthatwork, start at http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist.htm
Ask away if you have any more questions

[p.s. ...you also have the option to run ScanDisk and DeFrag in Safe Mode. Tap the F8 key while your system is starting up to enter Safe Mode. Your regular background processes won't be running, and system utilities for the hard disks have a better chance of running uninterrupted]
