Another e-mailed tip from ZDNET
On an NTFS partition, Disk Cleanup can compress old files to save space. But calculating the savings and performing the compression often take a long time, and on some systems, Disk Cleanup hangs during the process. If that happens, or if you don't care to wait, use this Registry tweak to disable the compression: Delete the key HKEY_ LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\ CurrentVersion\Explorer\VolumeCaches\Compress Old Files.
I myself would export this reg key incase you want this function back

Excellent advice! When cleaning up my hdd's in Win2k I always wondered why it took so long. Glad to finally see a workaround.

Does the compression help you some how that they put that feature in there? Or not?
The only reason it's in there is to save you some space. I don't compress anything on my working drives but I use 100% manual compression on my backup drive. I also don't use the automatic disk cleanup - I do that manually too.
