Using Win 98SE

When I right click on a file I get an option to Send to

My external cd writer is not on the list given. Any ideas how I can add this to make transferring files easier?

I believe that's only for Packet Writing CDs. Ones that allow you to send a file to a CD and burn it just like using a floppy. I have no idea how to change/configure it to your liking though, sorry. Maybe move a shortcut to the burner to that menu?

To treat a DVD or CD burner like a hard drive in Win98se, you need a third-party program like DirectCD or InCD [those usually come with the Nero or Roxio bundled with the burner]. I imagine that once installed, you could add the drive to the Send To menu with a Registry edit (if it's not actually available from the Roxio or Nero menus). I'm a bit busy tonight, but I can look tomorrow in case you haven't already found a way to do it. A Google search with "Send to" and "Registry" might do it.

Thanks Guys

Found this:

The Send To menu is simply a directory on your hard disk (\Windows\SendTo in Windows 95, 98, & Me - \Documents and Settings\{username}\SendTo in Windows 2000 and XP). Just drag-drop any folders, programs, or drive icons into this folder to add their shortcuts to the Send To menu.

I like that answer: nice and simple. You can probably tell that I haven't ever added or subtracted anything from a Send To menu. . .

I'm curious if the Send To works with an optical drive in Win9x without either InCD or DirectCD running. Seems like it might need one or the other (or something similiar). Did your setup work?

Sorry Gary

I have not tried yet. This is actually on my fathers machine so it will be Tuesday before I can try. I will post to let you know.

Seems too easy to work ,but hopefully!!

Update.

I only had a few minutes to try but I have successfully added his external drive to his 'send to' list using the method above.

I tried to send a file but it said there was no disc and cound I find a blank disc? No chance.

Hopefully the fact that it attempted to send it means it should work. Will try properly when I am next there.(taking some discs with me)

If DirectCD or InCD is running, and there is a formatted CD-RW in the drive, it should work fine. As a matter of fact, if you have InCD 4.x, when the formatted RW is mounted, it automatically comes up by itself in the Send To list.
