desktop icons white when booting up.then turn to original colour

i have win98se,when i turn on the pc,the desktop icons are white for a few seconds,then they turn to their original colour.
this also happens when i put in a cd,the icons are white,then they gradually turn to their original state,and colour.
i have no viruses or trojans or worms on my pc.
could someone please help out on this problem.my specs are
win98se
amd2600 cpu
512 crucial mem 3200
soltek nv 400 mobo
40gig maxtor hdd
santa cruz s/c
radeon 9600 v/c
22"monitor.

Is it for a few seconds actually, or just flash white like a dos icon then go to regular icon? Mine has done that on every pc i have had on load up not even lasting a second, i just assumed it was finishing loading everything. It has never caused any issues so I haven't ever addressed it. Unless it happens for a fair period of time, i wouldn't even think it was an issue. If it is i would like to know what it is as well.

That's a lot of system for a Win98se box - do you ever get any memory errors? Or when installing, did you ever see any "ndis" error messages? If not: no worries.

As the others have mentioned, the icons taking a while to draw in their full colors (instead of the white placeholder) is OK. It also might mean that you have a lot of background processes loading up. If you like to have a bunch of programs running in the background, and a few open in the foreground as well, the Win2k/XP systems might work a little better for you, since they handle resources differently. If you need to stick with 98se, see if you can trim your background processes a bit [http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk has a good set of articles about the whole thing, and a nice link to a list that can help identify what is starting, and what is necessary]. . . if you can get your "System Resources" up into the 90% range, you might notice less of that slow-to-load screen effect (games might play a little better as well).

Another thing that can affect that is your HD speed. Are you running a 5400 or 7200 RPM HD? (Note: a fast HD won't "cure" it, but help reduce it.)

thanks to all for giving the answers to my icons desktop problems.
from what i can gather,it is a normal state of the windows when it boots.
i have stopped some of my background software from running,so i hope this helps.
one thing im not sure about in the startup is,i have two lines of,"loadpowerprofile"rundll32.exe=loadcurrentpowerscheme.
i dont know whether to untick these 2 lines as well.
yes i have a maxtor hdd 7200.
i have tried winxp,but i dont find it very user friendly,win98se plays all my games pretty good,so that is why i stick to it.i know win98se isnt supported anymore with microsoft,but you can still get the updates

As long as Win98se can handle your games, heck, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".

Turning off your active desktop and using simple wallpaper and no background pattern can help with this issue.
