which video card is the best??

Well, I can't say this without possibly being biased in some shape or form. However, I can say that the Radeon X800 XT Platinum Edition and the nVidia GeForce 6800 Ultra are the two best out there. Those cost a lot of cash though - I'll keep it there.

I read a bunch of reviews, and even thought the 6800 may provide a few extra frames per second over the ATi(a difference that you won't notice), the picture quality on the ATI is supposed to be better. It also depend on if you want Pixel Shader 3.0 support or not. Right now the 6800 has it, the X800 does not.l

Actually, it is the other way round dan. With the last generation of graphics cards it was true, Nvidia was getting kicked in quality compared to ATI, but in this round the story is different. ATI are having problems, with Nvidia coming out on top:

Just get a Geforce 6800 GT and call it a day. It's the best bang for your buck right now in the newer gen video cards. Oh did I forget to mention that just about all 6800 GT's overclock to ultra speeds and more with little effort?

Oh wow - I can tell this is about to evolve into an "ATI vs. nVidia" thread - let's about that. The same can be done for an X800 Pro, which you can unlock the last four pipelines with a softmod into an X800 XT Plat Edt. You just need the right core and the right memory types - Samsung chips, I think.

Although I wouldn't recommend it, the softmodding process requires that you have the same core as the X800 XT (R420), and that you have a 1.6 ns RAM. The biggest difference between the two cards, if you compared them side by side, is the amount of rendering pipelines they have. The X800 XT have 16, X800 Pro has 12. This softmod would just unlock the last four pipelines, and you can clock it to X800 XT or X800 XT PE speeds. Again, I would not recommend doing this.

Well, you also need to right brand and such of the memory - like in the Radeon 9500 -->9700 Mod, you need to make sure that the RAM was a correct type and of correct lining. It really depends on how an individiual card handles it. I say it's not recommended, as doing so does several things. First of all, you void the warranty. Second of all, if you corrupt the hardware to the extent that the flashing wouldn't put it back to the original X800 Pro you had, it wouldn't be very good. I have heard of success stories of failures in X800 XT flashing, but flashing it back to the original X800 pro setting would return it to normal.

That being said, the best card out there is still the Radeon X800 XT PE and the GeForce 6800 Ultra.

i read that review and i think ati is the better of the two cards. well that's what i think. seing that the ati x800 pro PE dosn't require a huge cooling system, the nvidia does.

but i do think it was cheap of ati to unlock the 4 extra pipelines on the pro version of the card. that was really really cheap

My 6800 GT(16 pipelines) is overclocked a little higher than ultra speeds and my temp is 54 degrees idle, wow imagine that! All it took was downloading a file, installing and a few clicks, my temps never changed from when I was stock.
