Ok, i finally got tired of messing with this and thught I would ask for help. I'm running Win XP Pro and am using a US Robotics external 56k Faxmodem. The modem has been running a bit slow since I got it around a month and a half ago. Well for the last few days everytime I try to connect to the internet, I get to authentication part of the sign in process and the modem disconnects. It dials find and connects OK but just hangs up right when I get to the authentication part. My account info is ok becasue I giet in using the same info on my other machines.

At first I thought it was the ISP but I am able to get in on my other machines. I've performed some diagnostics using Windows diagnostics but Windows says the modem is functioning fine. A virus scan reveals nothing. Although Spbot Search and Destry (thinking it might be malware) errors out. Strange thing is, it never did before.

Any ideas of what might be the problem or what else I can do?

That's an external serial modem, correct? Do you use your ISP's software to make the connection, or is it just a Dial-up Networking connection? Have you tried a different phone line?

Actually the modem is an external USB. I thought at first it might have been because I was running it off a USB hub but when I took it off and gave it it's own port (with no hub) the problem still remained. For now I've returned to my PCI modem.

USB is the wrong thing to use for a dialup modem. Use PCI hardware modems (like a USR 2976) or external serial modems (like a USR 5686E).
