Hi I think I have an odd problem.

You see I am able to connect to the internet through my dial-up connection (ATT is my isp) and get the 2 computer icon on the lower right corner of my screen. That is where it ends though. I am not able to access any website or any internet application such as IMs or Outlook email. When I double click on the connection icon (2 computers) it show that I am connected. While connecting it even makes the tee too tee funny noice. I am not sure what to do?

I reinstalled the modem physically. No go. I cleared up all my cookies and offline files. No go. I c hecked if the modem works - it works but I can't access any webpage whatsoever.

Someone told me that there is a virus that captures my browswer and because of which I can't access the internet? Is this true?

I did try and reinstall the dialup driver but when i try to connect to ATT's site to install the software again i get the same problem.

I tried to also download the new phone directory ... but that again after the tee teoo too sound in the modem ... it doesn't connect. However the double computer icon shows that it is connected to the internet.

It is a dell computer with xp running on it.

Please help... I am a beginner.

Thank you,

Amit

There are programs called browser hijackers, sounds like what you friend is talking about. This doesn't sound like the culprit though. I am not sure exactly, but it sounds like the problem is between hardware and ISP, not software. I know that doesn't help much, but it narrows it down.

Just to be on the safe side, when connected:

Start -> Run -> type "cmd" -> type "ipconfig" (black box)

If the number is anything other then 169.x.x.x, then i could be wrong and something could be wrong with the software, but when you saying no software works, it makes me think it is something with the hardware.

Hi Neo,

It is not that no software works ... just that I am not able to connect to any software that gives me access to the internet. So for example an aol im will not work but microsoft word, excel and all that other non-internet stuff works fine.

What do you suggest I should do? Any anti-virus that might help?

Please advice.

Thank you,

Amit

Aiight, first things first, can you verify that you have an ip address, by following the ipconfig instructions???

We don't really need to know your ip address, probably best that you don't post it, just need to know that it is NOT 169.x.x.x or 0.0.0.0

make sure that you attempt this after the modem has connected and you have the two computers blinking
