32bit or 64bit processor?

I haven't ordered my parts for my new comp because I've just begun to debate the option of going with a 64bit processor (AMD Athlon 64 2800+ or AMD Athlon 64 3000+) instead of the AMD Athlon XP 3000+. Just wondering if it would be a smarter move since obviously software will soon be making the leap to 64bit.

I would go with the 64-bit so you stay somewhat ahead of the technology curve. As more software is rewritten to take advantage of 64-bit processors, it will be nice to have.

I would go for the 64 bit at this time.. big things should be right around the corner as far as 64 bit computing goes.

If you can wait, do it. This is why:

Right now, socket 754 is the mainstream for A64. AMD have introduced socket 939, which increases performance with a dual channel capability the socket 754's don't have. But, socket 939 is going to take over the mainstream spot, while socket 754 will be turned into a budget platform. The downside is that socket 754 is priced reasonably, while the future mainstream, socket 939, is priced stupidly. It is massively overpriced. If you aren't too bothered about upgrading in the future, then socket 754 is fine, but if you want more upgrade opportunities I recommend you wait for socket 939 to become reasonably priced.

How long do you expect to use the computer before you buy another? If you don't plan on buying another in a couple years it might be smart to get the 64-bit. Who knows when we'll see an influx of 64 bit apps.

If you can afford it and you don't plan on buying or upgrading in the near or not so near future- go with the 64. But don't rely on 64 bit apps to decide for you... since that's all very cloudy at the moment. (MS can't even get SP2 out in a timely fashion- at this rate expect a ready 64 bit MS OS at the turn of the decade)
