My place of business wanted to sell all of the out of date printers so I picked up an HP Laser Jet 4 with an internal print server for next to nothing. The problem I now have is the internal print server is made by a 3rd party (Osicom?) and I can't find anyone to help me change the settings.
I am trying to move this printer from a 10.xx.xx.xx network to a 192.168.x.x network. I am unable to reset the print server and I can't find the LAN menu to change the IP address.
Osicom has little support and a lot of broken links on their web site which leads me to believe this company is no longer in business.
Thanks for any help.

Have you tried contacting HP about it? Even though it is made by Osicom, if it is in an HP machine, HP shoul support it. I would shoot their tech support an e-mail.

I have contacted them through the phone and they are unable to help me because it is out of warranty. I just sent them an email also, but I assume they will deny my support here also.

Usually they will still answer your e-mails, you just aren't aloud to tie up their precious phone lines...lol...I think you will get an e-mail response.

HP Writes "Hewlett-Packard does not offer support via e-mail for your HP LaserJet
4 printer. ..."
There is more to the email like how to find the nearest HP repair center and stuff like that. Nothing that helps me.

I know my biggest problem is that the mio card is made by a company that is not supporting it anymore. I have found their web site (http://www.osicom.biz) and it talks about running a lot of different network tools to do the management from. None of the software will work properly and their troubleshooting steps are garbage.
Thank you for your help icallmedan. If anyone has used one of these cards before or been in my situation please reply with any information.
Thanks.

I have changed my configurations to match the 10.xx.xx.xx ip range and can now configure the printer through port 80.
... of course it isn't that easy. I don't have the password to submit any of the changes.
I have searched google in every way I can imagine and am unable to find a way to resolve this problem. Thanks for any help.

Can you http into the printer? ie - http://10.10.1.1
Is the interface HP's or this "Osicom"?

Yes, I have done that. The interface is Osicom.
It is very friendly, and I have found the default password, but that doesn't work anymore. I can't find how to reset the print server to allow me to set the password.
Right now everything is working because I have changed my IP range on my network to talk to the printer. I just don't want to leave my network like this forever because I can't figure out my printer settings.
Problem now - Resetting factory defaults for the Osicom (osicom.biz) jetxprint mio.
Thanks everyone for your help!

Wholy sh**! I just guessed it!
I noticed this thing doesn't lock me out after trying a few passwords earlier so I decided to just keep guessing until it worked (great idea huh?).
I started:
password
1234
admin
sysadmin
sysadm
**company name I bought it from**
hp
server - ding ding ding
server was the password. How exciting!
Thanks everyone for your help.

Oops...
Now it doesn't have an IP address so I can't get into it.
HELP!
I know you want to fix this as a challenge, but you can buy HP J2552's on Ebay pretty cheap, $30 or so will fix you right up, this will be front panel configurable.

Don't ruin his glory glc! LOL! Bu in all actuality glc is right, because why put yourself through all of this trouble when you can get a printer just as good on ebay for cheap. I mean you could sell the printer again to someone else after all, and let them deal with it ;-)

This is unbelievable. I found an article about some xerox machine with a jetxprint mio installed and their password was sysadm. I tried sysadm and it worked.
I feel like I am the luckiest unlucky person in the world!
This is my first time installing a printer through TCP/IP but so far it's a learning experience (to say the least). I walked through the setup process including printing a test page and nothing printed. I just haven't found the energy to troubleshoot this problem now.
I'm about to jump in again - head first. Wish me luck!

I can ping the printer (192.168.1.25) but an unable to print to it. I have set it up as a local printer in XP, specified the IP, it was recognized and added (with little problems), and now it can't print a test page.
*crying*... help :(

Login remotely through TCP/IP - PASSED
Print test page from admin panel of printer - PASSED
Ping printer - PASSED
Print test page through windows - FAILED
Print from Notepad - FAILED
Using the same driver it works using the parallel port.
Thanks for any help.
Dan: a J2552 is not a whole printer. It's a HP Jet Direct MIO card that is what is *supposed* to go into the slot on his printer instead of the 3rd party card that he has.
Art - my best suggestion is still get the real card. Are you printing RAW to port 9100?

I see...I thought you meant the J2552 was a printer, and you said it was $30 so I thought that would be a lot less hassle than messing iwth an older Printer, but it still makes more sense to upgrade to a better card, or the card that is supposed to be in it.
I can't help you with the setup for that MIO card, but if it has a proper IP and subnet mask (gateway and DNS not required) and the printer is installed on a standard TCP/IP port set to RAW, port 9100 (for the first printer, next one is 9101, etc. if it's a multiport external), it should print. That's all I ever have to do with a real Jet Direct, and I use the front panel MIO/EIO menu to hard set the card. There may be something in the card admin that's not set properly or it doesn't use 9100, but I have no way of telling. As a test of the card, can you set it to use IPX or NetBEUI? The card itself may be bad.
Edit - If you use IPX or NetBEUI, you will need print server drivers on the computer - this may not be an option. Come to think of it, it's possible that this card may need them for TCP/IP, it may not be capable of accepting a standard TCP/IP port. Just a thought - I'm digging at straws. I know that Linksys print servers need drivers for any protocol.

The port defaulted to 10000. I will attempt to change it to 9100 and see what happens.
The TCP/IP setup allows me to setup an IP address, subnet mask, and a default gateway. IPX and NetBEUI are not options in the setup of this card. It offers appletalk and Banyan Vines which are also no help to me.

I changed the port to 9100 and received the same problem. I believe the problem I am having is specifying the mio card during setup. XP wants me to specify the type of card I'm connecting to and mine isn't listed. I tried custom and setup the port and IP but that just does the same thing (timeout).
How could I get the settings needed for my mio card during that setup?
XP won't accept a standard TCP/IP port?
With a HP MIO, all I've ever had to do is set it up as a local printer, unchecking automatically detect plug and play, and choosing standard TCP/IP port. Type in the IP address and it finds it and installs it. If this is the point where it's asking what type of card, then it's not compatible and you will have to monkey around with card types - first one to try is generic. As I said, you may have to install a driver.
