I have 2 computers sharing an internet connection between a Dl -604 D-link router. The main computer sits right next to the router and DSL modem and runs XP. the other is an older Win98-equipped 'puter located in a bedroom. I am wondering how I can share files between these 2 computers ( only 2, no more to be added). I would like to be able to access files on the main computer from the one ion the bedroom, and use the mains printer from the bedroom 'puter also. How can I do this? I enables file sharing on the Win98 machine but I cannot see it in 'My Computer' on either one. What am I doing wrong here, or is it just not possible for this to worK? I do know basics, but not super-literate on this type of stuff. Any ideas? Thanx in advance

Run the network connection wizard on the XP machine. It will give you the option to create a floppy disk to configure networking on other non-xp computers. You will also want to make sure the computers are in the same "workgroup" by right clicking on the "my computer" icon and changing it in the properties. Changing this from the windows default is not a bad idea, as every little bit of extra security helps.

OK, I ran the wizard on the main XP machine, transferred it to floppy, ran it on the Win98 Seconday machine, still no luck. Internet works fine, just cannot see the other computer on either one.

check workgroup name, has to be the same on both. *should* already be the same between xp and 98, but I don't know for sure. Also, you'll have to designate which drives/folders XP will share. The network wizard should have given you a screen to "add a network place" where it should've found the other computer

workgroup name is MSHOME on both, all the wizard did was install and ask how I shared teh internet connection. I checked the 2nd one saying connects through gateway, i chose that becasue It is going through a router and not directly daisy-chained through the main one. I also went into the 98 machine, control panel, to network and clicked on 'file and print sharing', both were checked, and closed it out, I still cannot see anything when looking for the other computer.

Also, I went to network 'view network computers' and I see the Win98 machine , but when i click on it it says "not accessible - you may not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the admin of this swerver to find out iof you have access permission. The network path was not found."

Click on the network icon (network neighborhood in 98) and select "add a network place" This should give you the option to search for or manually select drives on any computers in the same workgroup.

There is no option to select a network place, I can, however see both computers, and an 'entire network' icon, however when I select the main computer icon to browse it says it is not accessable. I shared ALL the drives on the 98 machine, and the 'C' drive on the XP machine. Yet I cannot access either one from the other....

The Network menu, on the xp machine, should have "add a network place" on the upper right side of the screen. Then you select "add another network place" rather than the MSN places, and select microsoft workgroup.

Network icon (desktop)->Add a network place (under "network tasks)->NEXT->"choose another network location"->BROWSE->Entire network->Microsoft windows network->MSHOME->computer list should come up....

If I am incorrect, I've only networked xp->xp and mac->xp ;) let me see what i can find. But you should have that option on your xp machine

If your XP drive is NTFS I don't think the 98 will be able to see it....however xp shouldn't have any trouble reading off of the 98.

OK, when I get to 'MSHOME', I can open it, see both the main and secondary computer names, but when I click on the secondary, it will not open, nor allow me to make another folder, thereby not letting me map it.......This should be easy, shouldn't it??lol??!!

the secondary being the 98 machine I assume? Sounds like either a problem with the share settings on the folders, or some kind of account privilage problem. Yes it should be easy with xp.....I apologize haven't used 98 in quite a long while...Did you give all folders read/write access, or just share the root (c) drive entirely?

**edit** any firewall software running? XP firewall or third-party?

Yes, the secondary being the Win98 machine. On both machines the 'C:' Drive was enabled for sharing. XP firewall is not engaged
