I need help Please.

Just purchased HP DVD movie writer dc-4000. Can not get it to work correctly. When tried to burn an hour video. It crashed my pc. Message told me there was an error, then the device was not detected, I rebooted hoping that would help, but my Pc did not want to start again. I had to restart in safe mode...was very scary for some one who knows LITTLE. I have been reading what I can find, but I'm afraid to do much. I read the Media player could have caused conflict...it doesn't work now either. I have enhanced USB. Plenty of hard drive. Using Windows XP. and Verbtim DVD+RW.
Just want to save some Video and some old photos of my Mom who I lost in November.
What should I do? :confused:

can let me know what is ur motherboard and the processor? now i think u need to unplug the dvd drive from ur computer and try to restart it, just start in normal mode. i think is no problem. then backup ur all important file first.

if window can start, try to plug back the dvd drive, and load it, install driver if it asked. what dvd u using to burn the data? is that a quality dvd, sometime bad quality dvd will not work problely...

With the lack of information it is hard to venture a guess........could be a master slave conflict but I suspect a Via chipset motherboard that hasen't had the 4 in 1 drivers loaded........you can load various versions of Windows without 'emand no conflicts will show in device manager....but screwy things can happen if they aren't there. I've seen their omission cause a world of problems with burners.

I have Pentium4. How do I find the info on the motherboard? Sorry, My skills are very limited. The DVD+RW is made by Verbatim. Best Buy people said it would work. But ya know.... Thanks for your replies! :)

Have you checked their web site for driver updates? If not, I would try that first.

I see you have enhanced USB...is that the same as USB 2.0? If not perhaps you need a USB2.0 adaptor card.......you know...one of those PCI add on cards....your problem does sound like a standards conflict of some kind. With the burner unpluged....does the computer boot normally again?

Device manager lists USB 2.0 hub. Is that the same thing? I updated the drivers when I first installed the software. This device did not come with much instuctions. Only a 6 step quick set up. Some where I read in a help file that third party software will cause conflicts. It will not work with any other burning software installed on the PC. But I never dreamed it would cause my PC not to reboot. I did manage to burn small pieces of video, about 15 minutes worth. But when I tried to burn the hour piece,on a separate DVD+RW, that is when the real trouble began. I have Windows media player, real player, could those be causing trouble? They do have the ability to burn to CD.

If that third party software is a known problem, uninstall it, and see what happens.

*Stokes imaginary moustache* Well, lemme think aloud, I know there are few if any good free DVD VIEWING softwares...But that's another problem alltogether.

What burning software are you using??? I'm thinking that may make a difference. As well as just which OS your using.

And I've always known thrid party software to conflict with many things.

It is possible your problem is completely unrelated to the burner......the fact that you burned a short DVD and then had the system crash when you tried to burn a long one could indicate a cpu heating problem. Burning can be a very cpu intensive process.......if the inside of your computer is full of dust.....or your CPU cooling fan is just marginal.....or failed......it could be building up heat to the point that the computer shuts down......What kind of processor do you have?

Just another thought: If the problem was software related, why would the computer not boot? The software isn't yet loaded at that point. This is more fuel for the fire than it is a solution, but I have to wonder about that.
