lite on manufactures good quality drives and its cheaper :D
I'd go with the lite on drive

One reads and writes Way faster than the other. Also costs twice as much.

A lot depends on how much you think you'll be using it. If you'll use it every day, go for the fast one.

looks like the same speeds to me...
the sony is just more specific on the speeds of each type and its even slower reading DVD-ROM

I would chose the Liteon. I don't have this particular Liteon drives, but I tend to use Liteon for all burners, whether CD-RW or DVD-RW. They've all worked flawlessly. Nearly all burner reviews I've seen over the past couple of years place Liteon right behind Plextor for performace. And Plextor is a bunch more expensive. The other reason I like Liteon is the inclusion of the Nero Software. Best burning software I've used.

Yeah, Lite-On burners are very good performers. Sony burners are very good performers too and tend to be a little more quiet running.

Either brand will do what it's supposed to do and do it very well. Up to you which one you want to get.

One other note...the Lite-On drive faces tend to be a truer light beige color and the Sonys will be much lighter and whiter.

I installed a Lite-On 832S burner yesterday - very nice drive, runs quiet, and it comes with PowerDVD 5.0 and Nero Express 6.3. The only differences between the retail and OEM are the OEM only comes with software and an analog audio cable, the retail comes in a fancy box with those items plus a manual, screws, and a couple blank DVD's - a 8X +R and a 4X -R.

Folks, Sony does not produce any drives. They rebadge LiteON drives.

That means in particular:

The Sony DRU-700A and the LiteOn SOHW-832S
are ONE and the SAME

So, pick whichever is cheaper. . or if you have a software preference then get the one that comes with the software you like.
