The hard drive may be going bad. Perform a scandisk with the Windows Scandisk to verify it. If so, get the utility from Maxtor to diagnose your drive, then get a RMA# so you can warranty it (or return to place of purchase if possible).
Maxtor? You mean Samsung.........
Sorry to break it to you this way, but Samsung hard drives are notoriously unreliable. Run Samsung's diags or Ontrack Data Advisor - and get a replacement drive cross shipped as soon as possible before it grows any more bad sectors and starts eating your data - and while you can still clone the drive.

Ooops... what me smokin'.... had Maxtor on the brain. Samsung... yes, the drive is probably going south.

Many thanks for the prompt replies.
I suspected that the hard drive was suspect.
Thanks again

I cotacted the supplier of my hard drive and explained the problem, he said "bring it in, we will replace it"
They gave me a new Fujitsu fast spin hard drive, I fitted it last night and loaded Win Me, (after fdisk and format)
Everything is fine now.
It is rare these days to find such good service.
I would like to thank again you good folks for the help and advice.

Man, I would worry about a place that carries both Samsung and Fujitsu drives. What other junk will they stick you with?
Hey - nothing wrong with Fujitsu drives! I'll take them over Maxtor, Quantum, or Seagate any day.
