Any Advantages to LCD Moniters?

I have been looking into LCD moniters latley, is their any real difference between CRT's and LCD's other than space saving?

oh... and I have been wondering what exactly is a dead pixel? I worry I will get them with LCD moniters...

Of course. At native resolution, the sharpness of a TFT is way better than every CRT could possibly dream of. That was actually the key advantage that got me into TFTs 4 years ago.
But remember that at other resolutions the sharpness will decrease, so it's only an advantage for the native resolution.

A dead pixel is if the transistor that controls the pixel does not react anymore. The pixel will either be constantly on, or constantly off.
Actually it's not even an entire pixel which is dead, only a subpixel, means either the red, green or blue one. So that particular pixel can still display some colors, but others not.
If a dead pixel can't display the color anymore you will see it as a little dot somewhere on the screen. It's actually hardly noticeable. Good TFTs have only 1 dead pixel, if any.

Another difference is that LCD's aren't as good for gaming. There are problems with ghosting. Some LCD's are completely useless for games. This, however, is changing and more and more LCD gaming monitors are coming out.

Try samsung monitors in the 16ns and below. But you will pay a premium for LCD's compared to CRT.

its expected that in a couple of years LCDs will be half the price they are now, due to increased output, so if u can wait, then it might pay off.
aswell as all the advantages said already, they also use less power, and create less heat, and look nicer :)

dead pixels are a lot less frequent than they used to be. LCDs are much more sharp than CRTs in native resolution, but outside of the native resolution, they are worse than CRTs.

My husband and I are pretty avid gamers.

For his birthday, I ordered him a VooDoo Hexx and based on this article at Tom's Hardware:

I bought him a Samsung SyncMaster 192b to go with it. Newegg shipped quick and we got it the next day.

We promptly hooked it up to his existing machine to 'check it out.' Not one dead pixel and it really looks fantastic. I noticed no "ghosting" at all when he plays and he's remarked several times since he got it that he's really impressed. It was a hefty chunk of change ($825+), but since he 'dinged' 50 this year, I figured he deserved something super special for his birthday.

I would not have recommended an LCD gaming monitor prior to this one. Now I'm thinking I would love the desk space and cooler room temperature, so I may just have to replace the other three CRTs. =)

Just be careful on the dead pixel thing - the manufacturers only warrant returns on a certain number. For example, the SyncMaster when I ordered it would only qualify for warranty replacement for 8 or more dead pixels. My love of the monitor would certainly have waned quickly if I had to deal with that.
