cannot connect

I am running windows se. I have tryed several different modems, several different isp's, and several clean installs. nothing is working. I think it has something to do with either my bios, my dialup adapter settings, or irq's. I do not have enough confidence to play with these settings. I would really appreciate some advise on what my problem may be.

When I try to connect my modem cannot complete the hand shake. It cuts off.......

Mega dittos. You'll be up and running in no time, but things must be set up correctly. Once modem installed and recognized by Windows, it's a piece of cake. Same standard format in DUN and Network settings that everyone uses. As Lawman said, what happens?

Since you're using the Internet now, check the settings in Control Panel, Network. Note all settings. In My Computer, double click Dial up Networking, right click your ISP, properties. You should see, under Server types, only enable software compression and TCP/IP are checked. Click TCP/IP settings. Use IP header compression and use default gateway... are checked. Use these same settings on problem pc.

In control panel, double click modems, highlight the modem, properties, connection. Should see 8, none and 1. Click advanced. Use error control, compress data, use flow control and hardware checked. Nothing at this time in extra settings.

I'm assuming your login and password are correct.

I am going to go home and try that, but I recall having all those settings. Can you please go further....I would really appreciate it.

When you say it doesn't complete handshake, what kind of msg. are you getting. Are you set up with a ISP? Part of the dial-up and handshake process is sending your password, have they assigned you one or allowed you to specify one?

Hey Chad,

Which modems have you tried? Did you have the latest firmware and drivers for each? Did you try reinstalling Dial-Up Networking and/or TCP/IP? Is your phoneline in good shape? HTH

I agree it sounds like user name and password or incorrect components uder network.

You might try calling your ISP and let them talk you thru the problem. My ISP has a toll-free number for this. Good luck.

I had a similar problem with my old machine. It turns out that my modem was fried! I slapped another modem in it and I was back up and runnin'! You might want to try changing out your modem. :)
