Is paying $160 on newegg my only/best option for getting MS word and MS powerpoint?
Yeah, its around $250 for an outdated version at circuit city. Thats a good price.
The only way to get it cheaper is to steal it.

I know it's not directly what you asked, but would a copy of OpenOffice do the same trick for you? It can do just about the same thing as MS, even open .doc files (not sure about powerpoint) and it's free.

I would NEVER pay $250 for an office suite as openoffice requires less space then mickey$oft's crippleware, and its free.

Open Office is fully compatible with windows and it's free.
If you've got a better price, go for it.

It's hardly crippleware. There is a reason that most companies buy MS Office when they could have OpenOffice for free. MS Office is an excellent suite. I bought it. I am very happy with it. $160 is a very good price for it.

Then the dude gets to pay for it.
Newegg has those 1-day sales, so you could get lucky, but basically he's going to have to pay the bucks ( does M$ still unbundle office programs ? ).

You don't necessarily have to get the newest version. Office 2000 has been the standard for years now.

If you have a student in your household or you are a student, you can get the Academic version cheaper. NewEgg has the Academic Version that is basically cheaper MS Office Basic for $136. The Academic Pro Version is $162, and the MS Office Basic (non Academic) is $164.
If you are going to spend $160 for it, see if you are eligible for the Academic version. Just a thought.

Being a TA (considered faculty) at Fresno St I got Windows XP for $5 and the same for Office XP. $10 for an operating system and Office is not bad.
Their are subsitutes for Word and Powerpoint, but for a common user Word and Powerpoint are the easiest to use. $160 for Office is not a bad deal considering it is great software.
