I have a question, does Doom 3 have a storyline to it? I remember the original Doom and don't remember anything but shooting.

Just out of curiosity how did you get it a day early? DO you work at a game store or something?
Can't something int he game make the brightness/gamma increase. I had to do that in FarCry. My monitor was displaying it really darkly, so I increased the Gamma/Contrast. Same with Star Wars Galaxies free trial.

It has a storyline. Now, the thing to see is if such storyline will be forfeit like in the first one and the game will just turn into a mindless shooter.

ok played for 5 hours so far. taking a breather . trying to escape from Mars City. very well done game . I dont usually like scary games but this is sweet. just picked up the machine gun outside the labs now Im trying to find keys for supply chest in infermary . need bullets . must keep going. you gamers wont regret this one ;) plays beautiefully on my 9600pro as I stated in other post. storyline is typical of many other FSPs , you get shipped to remote area to investigate suspicious activities , everyone gets mutated , you kill everyone on your way out. :p havent tried multiplayer yet , typical modes , DM team DM , tourney etc etc
cheers

I started playing a bit this afternoon, after getting the game this morning, and the flashlight is one of the more useful items in the game. Many times you are in a very dark area and it is difficult/impossible to see, so the flashlight comes in handy.
The only problem I have with it so far is that sometimes it's too dark. I know that the game is supposed to be dark to add to the effect, but a few times, even with the flash light, it's tough to see.
Other then that, awesome game. And freaky too :p.

Well finally got time to play it a little. Sucks I got to go out tomorrow and won’t be back till late :( ... Hopefully I will have some free time soon to play it more.
I really didn’t think my system would handle the game but I upped the graphics to high and it seems to run fine. Just pauses once in while but I also have allot of junk opened on my desktop. The only problem I have noticed with the graphics and I’m sure it’s because of my card is that the peoples faces are light and dark. I will add a screenshot so you can see.
I'm really gonna see if i can get a better card.

found something pretty neat just a second ago. theres hints in the game that requires you to go on the Internet to find stuff . I had to go to www.martianbuddy.com to get a code for a supply chest that was received in the game. you pickup dead technicians PDAs and ya have to read there emails in order to get access codes too.
who said there wasnt any thinking involved in this game. :p

I got a copy of the game. The people in Gamestop had the game out Last Night! Why wasn't I made aware? :D The game is freakingly awesome. Demons are smarter than the average bear. I actually died several times already. The "reload" feature gets some getting used to. You have to pay attenstion to the sounds in order to survive.

My wife liked it so much she had me install it in the living room system so I can play it and she can watch on the big screen.
A must have title for sure.
I bet everyone is going to be surprised when I say I'm waiting for a demo to come out and try that before I buy the game. I know it's good, but I want to try it before I shell out $50 for it. And on a side note, my parent's don't like me buying this particular game.

gfxinfo = Graphicscard infomation
god = God mode
noclip = No Clip

I just ran Doom3 with the ATI Radeon 9800 Pro on High settings, and it gave me artifacts...was kinda surprised. Supposedly, high settings are for the next generation (6800/X800) cards, while ultra settings are for the cards that aren't released yet...I'm thinking the GeForce 6800 U can handle it, might be wrong. I notched it down to Medium quality, upped the resolution to 800x600, and turned on AF - ATI shines there. The graphics, combined with surround sound, is just simply stunning.

From what I remember reading in September's PC Gamer Magazine, the Ultra setting runs with everything in a level uncompressed so it uses something around 500MB of graphics memory. So yeah, i guess that means that the cards needed to run it that high just aren't around yet.

You might try startAVIdemo, then stopAVIdemo or simply stop. I am not sure but it most games it has the start and stop somewhere in the demo command line. That is simply a guess, I am not sure.
**edit
I found this link:
http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/doom3/hints.html
aviDemo is the correct code. Try aviDemo name like, the code and then a name for it. So maybe "aviDemo scary" then it might save as "scary".

this game is so sweet! I got out of school around 7:30pm was on my way home and stop at Best Buy for a Cell phone. Little did I know Doom 3 was due the 3rd. I saw it in one of those show case things they have in the middle of the isles, and literally run to grab a copy! I felt like kicking my own ass for forgetting about it. My fiance is going to miss me a lot.
I have played the game for a few hours (went to bed around 2 am) It is scary as hell, well detail, it is a master piece! Good job Id, the wait was worth it!
I am running the game in the medium settings 840x604 or something like that, the higher levels of video, the game starts to give you problems. (I have a 9600)

This is a quote straight from the magazine (PC Gamer, September):
In Ultra Quality, everything is uncompressed, but most levels require about 500MB of texture memory, so we don't enable this setup by default on any currently shipping video card.
That was the point i was trying to make.

The basic story is on the inside flap of the game box. I'm not going to say the story is spectacularly deep. You are running and shooting to save the world from evil. What I will say is that even though it sounds simple on the surface the game is pretty deep. The clues you get from PDAs along the way add to the experience alot. Also, the suspense and gameplay will keep you playing. I would install it. If you like any shooters, it is a hell (pun intended?) of a ride. :)

Well, I sat down and played it for 3 hrs straight. Specs in sig, and had it running with catalyst 4.6 (4.1 caused random crashes or artifacts followed by a crash), and at 800x600 at the high setting.
I didn't notice any lag up until just past the 2hr mark. It appears as though after playing it a while, it starts to clog up the system RAM. A shut down and a reboot took care of that.
As for gameplay, I only had two complains. First, I thought there are too many pitch black areas. It was cool, though, how some of the zombies just appeared to melt out of the shadows. The second thing was that I was disappointed with the slow rate of fire on the shotgun, and the lack of decent range on it. Guess I'm too used to halo's shotgun.
If you have played halo, this will definately prepare you on reloading techniques. (Propain mentioned earlier about this being tricky)
The other interesting thing about the game is the way you take damage. Unlike most FPS's that I've played where the screen flashes red when you've been hit, in doom 3, you actually get knocked around. Another bit of added realism.
I was also pleasantly surprised about the level of interactivity with the environment. Boxes, laptops, keyboards, small crates, carts and (etc) all went flying when attacked. I was, however, looking forward to shooting out some of the monitors, but it appears they are bulletproof, even when already damaged :p
So, I guess that's my abbreviated review of the game so far. Definitely a step in the right direction. :)

Its a great relief point till HL2 comes out. You can bet that vidie card sales are gonna go up . my cousin loaded it on his rig tonight (2500+, 512pc2700, 20gig Quantum, GforceMX440 ) and it ran on low settings with all the goodies off . I told him to throw the Fireball out the window and upgrade to a WD 8mb drive and get a 9800pro. :)

A new HDD would only help load times, not game performance. Well it might povide a minimal increase, but not noticeable. I know that that Quantum sucks, I have it in my old system, and it is the loudest think I have ever heard.

icallmedan, the speed and the cache of the HD noticeably impact game performance. A lot of textures and other elements still need to be accessed from the HD and the virtual memory. You won't see a dramatic increase in fps, but some lags can happen in old units with 2MB in cache, spinning at 5400 rpm and using ATA66/100.

08-05-2004, 10:45 PM
Yeah, that makes sense. An upgrade to a 7200RPM 8Mb cahce model would be better.

I am running it on two systems, one with a Radeon 9600 128MB and the other a Radeon 9700 128MB, both run fine at high detail, 1024x768.
I like the game. Like being the key word. I don't love it. It's a great little tech demo, and the suspense is pretty cool at times. But, the same old cliche FPS tactics are in full force. Find Key A, Open Door A. Enemies spawn behind you, hop out of closets that don't look like closets. I won't complain about the AI, because after all, they are Zombies. But, it does get lame when you walk past a wall, and a hidden door open and out comes Zombies. How did these stupid Zombies find that hidden room? And why were they just sitting in their waiting for me to walk past?
The flashlight thing is ok, but you would think in 2145 the guns would have flashlight rails, like our own guns have now days.
Overall, I would rate the game a 7 out of 10. Once you get past the pretty graphics, it's a standard FPS/Horror game. I'd still buy it, I'm not saying it's not fun. It just doesn't advance the genre the way say the original HL did. The gameplay is fairly repetitive, but the suspense will keep you on your toes until you realize the pattern. Dark Corner = Zombie. Ammo cache = Imp will Spawn behind you.

This confirms my suspicions that the game was going to be just pretty graphics and dull gameplay. What can one expect from a game where the story is neglected?
Seems like this game was just designed to boost the sales of high-performance video cards.

I think the game is more of a way to sell the Doom 3 engine to other game makers, much in the same way Quake 3 arena sold the engine with little or no gameplay.
I would love to see what other game developers could do with the engine. My only concern would be the wide open spaces, something FPS engines tend to have trouble with. Unreal kinda changed that, but the id engines always seem weak when it comes to large, open areas.
There is a story, it's pretty typical sci-fi fare. It could have been done better, but I have a feeling the mass media will hail this as the end all game for the 2004.

Yep, now that I've played if for a few more hours and gotten over the eyecandy, it's a standard FPS "find the key and open the door" game. Some of the creatures that get progressively introduced are neat, but it does get a little old. Suspenseful? No doubt. However, it's not very dynamic. You have to do things in sequential order to get from A to B. Not much deviation from a single path.
bigandy

I think the reason some feel "disappointed" with the game, is that it was waaaay over-hyped. I'm not saying the game doesn't have it's faults, but it's still a very good game. The thing is that you can only do so much with a FPS. Basically every FPS is the same. Find the goodies, kill the bad guys.
Nuclear Krusader

While that is the main drive of an action game, the storyline still remains crucial. Take Max Payne 2 for instance. Yes, it's still a game about gunning down baddies and you kill dozens of them; however, the way the plot advances immerses you in the game completely. You feel Max's cause is your cause and you want to co-operate to fix his life. The way technology is used to advance the story is impressive. The pretty graphic effects and DX9 are put to good use in the dream parts, where you wander through Max's psyche and get a deeper feeling of what the character's going through. The different TV shows whose episodes you get to watch throughout the game paraphrase the main plot and can give insight as to what's next or clues as to what happened, or sometimes they are just a fun relieving stop for both Max and your mouse. Enemies chatting between them is another element that sucks you into the game, sometimes they talk about the main plot and you can get clues from them, or sometimes they just talk about their personal lifes (irrelevant to the game's plot but still a nice touch to imbue more realism in the game thru NPCs personality-giving).
Those elements are what make a game worth buying, not just pretty graphics and jaw-dropping effects. Effects, graphics, cool weapons, dynamic lighting, etcetera, are just means a designer uses to tell a story. Immersiveness and replay value, amid other things, come from the developer's ability to mingle technology with story-telling skills.

Well I played the game up until about the part where I found the first scientist in the comm room. Then it all hit the fan and the demons started coming out. I almost peed in my pants. I have never played a horror FPS before. I can honestly say that I am glad that Trent Reznor did not do the music becuse that would have made me actually loose bladder controll. The game is a new experience for me. Scary as all get out. I dont know if i will be able to get the nerve to play for more than 15 minutes at a time. The thing I don't like about the game so far is just that it seems that whenever you walk into a well-lit room, the lights in the room always seem to go out after walking a few steps into it. Then you are forced to use your flashlight, and as soon as you do, BAM! Zombies...oooo...ahhhh...the game is pretty suspenseful at times, but sometimes it is quite repetative.

So far the game is pretty creepy. I am a bit disappointed with the game play, I can only play it for a half hour before I am bored with it. The graphics are insanley good though. Im running on high settings 1024x768 with no problems and aa turned on, im kinda surprised. The games so darn dark though you cant enjoy the graphics or death animations because of the having to switch to the flashlight is so annoying.
