A friend was having some problems with her computer so I had her run scandisk, defrag, download NAV defenitions and scan for virus, then download and run spybot.

She is running Win ME. I don't know what version of IE.

After all of this she now gets the following windows when she opens up IE.

spytxt1 Notepad
"If your notepad launched and is displaying this message... Then spyware programs can control applications on your computer and it is urget that you download spy deleter immediately. Don't allow spyware programs to damage your unsecure computer."

Here CD rom drive and CD-R/W drive tray open at this point.

Another notepad window:
"Cannot find the c:windows/temp/interent files/content. IE5/ATJCI*FY/spytext[1].text file
Do you want to create a new file"

another window:
"spicy is back xxx site"

Window:
Stop -Input security notice from spyware deleter

Is your computer suffering from...
click on this link for immediat help"

And of course a search bar is now at the top of here task bar.

and another windowd:
"spyware stormer - 46 spyware infections found"

So what is the task to clean this stuff out?

thanks
mike

She could switch to Mozilla or Firefox. :) But you should try downloading and running adaware as well as spybot, they both catch a lot that the other doesn't.

AdAware and Spybot are two top-notch anti-spyware programs.

Before downloading any programs advised by a website it is a good idea to check on the programs that are questionable or NOT legitimate. Many of these supposed "anti-spyware" programs are known to actually install spyware.

There is a link here somewhere in another thread to find a listing of questionable programs. I'll do a search and try to post it in a bit.
