Mouse wheel is doing its own thing

My mouse wheel on my Microsoft "Wheel Mouse Optical" is spinning on its own accord. I'll be playin FarCry or something and the weapon changes, or I'll be viewing web pages and it just suddenly skips a few lines. Is there any way to tighten it or something? I don't really want to add a mouse to the upgrades I'll be getting soon.

Wheel mouse, right? I think its dirty. Open and clean it.

That is a sign of your mouse is not able to cope with the speed of your hand, thats why iit skips, from one place to another.

I have an optical mouse, the middle mouse button (wheel) is what's skipping.

I believe BustaRomeo has 512mb? Or am I getting confusd? Do you have any other mice to test with? Does it do this with them?

OK, I think I need to start again. I am quite sure that the problem has to to do with the middle mouse button on my optical mouse, I strongly doubt it has anything to do with my (yes) 512MB of RAM. Even if it was the RAM, it wouldn't explain why my weapons change to either one weapon above or below it in games.

I have seen the same issue with several of the wheel "mice" I have used. Work, home, brother's pc, they all seem to do it once in a while. I think it happens when you scroll the wheel and although it feels like it's kind of snapped to it's next position it hasn't quite locked in place. Then it just arbitrarily pops into position (usually just as a trigen jumps in front of your face). As far as I know, there isn't a way to correct this, although that's probably not what you want to hear. If you do manage to get it working well, post it up here. I'D LOVE TO KNOW HOW!

you can still take it apart to clean out the scroll wheel. Mine had quite a bit of dust lodged in there when I took it apart to clean it.

If you inadvertantly press down on the wheel, it activates Auto Scroll - which will scroll it up and down just by moving the mouse. In the Intellimouse properties, change the Wheel Button from Auto Scroll to Disabled.

I have the same mouse and the scroll wheel is a bit loose compared to other mice I have used. It is easy to bumb it and make it scroll accidentally. I have gotten used to it and it doesn't bother me anymore. Stryker explained what happens quite well. The wheel doesn't quite pop into position sometimes.
