Surge protectors connected to UPS

I just bought a Tripp-Lite OMNIVS1000 UPS, and in the manual it says not to connect extension cords or surge protectors to the output of the UPS.

Is this a safety warning I need to abide by, or is it something I can ignore? If I can't connect a surge protector, can I at least connect a power strip that has no surge protection?

Well one time at my co-op I made the mistake of connecting a power strip to a UPS. the UPS didnt take it so well.... so its not a good idea to throw power strips to a UPS. besides the UPS is really only usefull for the PC since that if the power goes out, you still have some power to keep the system going. a printer or scanner wouldnt really need that.

I think those things are made to handle only so much flow of electricity. They each have a specific number of plugs for that reason. I wouldn't add more stress to it. Take it back and get a bigger one with more outputs if you have a need for them.

It's got 6 plugs, but since two of them are for wall warts (my wireless mouse and network switch) I only effectively have 4 plugs. The only item I can't plug in because of this is my file server, which isn't even on all that often anyways, but I'd prefer to be able to shut it down normally in the event of a power outage. Since this is a 1000va UPS, I don't imagine it will be overstressed by the load from a single CRT and computer, and the mouse and network switch use a fairly negligible amount of power.

I suppose I will add a Power outlet saver (http://jameco.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10001&catalogId=10001&productId=124979) which, as it is an extension cord, is not permitted according to the manual, but I doubt it will create an adverse situation.

Those will cause no problems at all - just get one for each of your wall warts. APC even builds a couple of those into a lot of their UPS units for that very reason.

Yeah, my UPS does have two of those extension cords built in, but those are merely surge protected, not battery backed up.
