I'm thinking DOS only went up to ver 6.2

but the laptop I'm working on says "cannot run Windows with the installed version of MS-DOS upgrade MS-DOS to version 8.0." searched everywhere for matching errror messages or articles.. anyone any ideas????

Boot with the windows cdrom and reinstall windows..

laptop dosent have a Cd-rom. I bought it used recently all it came with is boot-disk.. I got past other missing files this is kicking my butt. Does anyone know how I can upgrade my Dos to 6.2 dont understand why i need to but owell .. lol :cool: why woulden't the boot disk have everything I need roughly anyways????

Well, DOS 6.22 was the last standalone DOS. The DOS integrated in Win 95 was called DOS 7.0. . so I reckon DOS 8.0 is the base of Windows 98. You can't get it separately.
If that laptop does have Windows 98 on it, time for a reinstall. If it has no CD-ROM drive, hook one up. You only need to copy the files to hard drive, and then start the setup from there.

Sounds like someone did a SYS C: with an older bootdisk.

Windows 98. . so my guess was right. No you can't add DOS because it's no standalone DOS that you can just install afterwards, it's integrated in Windows 98 and is what Win98 is based on.

What you can do is to reinstall Win98 over itself, that should fix it. But a clean install will be the best way. Don't forget to save your data before doing a clean install, though.

Boot off of it and type SYS :

This command will copy a "win98" version of Command.com


Are you sure there is an operating system on the drive?

You can run a standalone windows 98 [ver 44.10.2222] if you make an emergency boot disk and copy the transient programs from c:\windows and c:\windows\command. It is a reduced set, not nearly as functional as the 6.22.
I can't remember the results of ver with the floppy booted, but suspect that I would have remembered if it said 8.0.
The underlying DOS for 95 has been called 7.0 in many locations. It also has a reduced set of utilities.
This thread has raised my curiousity about whether the versions for 95 and 98 are the same. May respond some day when I have checked out the compatibility issues. Probably will look into the ME version also.
