i have a 80 GB wester digital sata hd hooked up to my new build rite now. i couldn't load win xp pro on it directly, so i got my old ide hd from my old comp, loaded win xp via dos. after i got win xp pro on my ide hd, i formated my sata hd. it formated successfully, and i can wirte files to it, have two games on there at the moment. but the problem is, in device manager, it's reading the sata hd as a scsi hd. . . . first off my mobo dosn't support scsi hd, and secondly, i have a sata hd, so what's the deal?
thanks :)

Device manager has a limited vocabulary so to speak. Besides, it works doesn't it?

Any raid controllers (even for PATA) will also appear as SCSI. As will "virtual" cdrom drives made by special programs like CloneCD and Alcohol120%. As for the fact that you couldn't use it as your main disk : you should be able to, just press F6 when XP setup tells you you can do it (when all setup files are being loaded after you just booted from the windows xp cd), and insert a floppy with the SATA drivers. Windows XP should give you the option to load those drivers and then you can install XP on the SATA disk. If you don't have a floppy, download the SATA drivers for your mb from the mb manufacturer's website and put them on a floppy (they usually include a program to do it for you).

i have another prob, as you know, i couldn't load win xp pro on the sata hd, so i loaded it on the old ide one i had in my old comp. well now, it's trying to boot from the cd for some reason, when i have it to load from my partitioned drive D:, and then C:, and then the cd rom (also tried disabling it but same result) in bios. well anyways, when i turn on my comp, it goes thru the screen where you have the option to enter bios, then it shows me on a separate screen that there is a sata hd connected and if i would like to set up raid (press tab), and then another screen where it shows wht's connected to the IDE and PCI slots, at the bottom of this screen, it says:
Verifying DMI Pool Data . . . . . . . . . . . update Success
Boot From CD
Boot From CD
Boot From CD
Disk Boot Faliure, Insert System Disk and Press Enter
well, i reset my comp (reset button) and after that it jus works fine. this happnes everytime i turnon my comp.
here is how my hdd's are set in computer management under Administrative Tools:
volume layout type file system status
( C: ) partition basic NTFS HEALTHY(system)
( I: ) Simple dynamic NTFS HEALTHY
( D: ) partion basic NTFS HEALTHY
C: and D: are my IDE hd, partitioned. D: is the system_Sav. that's why i have my first boot device is D: and then C: and then the cdrom. and I: is the sata hdd.
this is how my IDE devices and sata hdd are setup:
C: local disk
D: System_Sav
I: New volume
E: DVD-RW
F: CDRW
G: DVD
A: FDD
now, im going to try loading win xp thru dos, and see if i have to press F6 to load the sata drivers, if it does, well and good and i'll post back, if it dosn't i'll post back with more questions.
thanks :)
***edit i have formatted my I: drive (sata hdd). i tried loading win xp thru dos but i think it was trying to load it onto the ide hdd, on which i already have winxp pro. i think i need to disconnect my ide hdd. can i do it without dc'ing it? how would you do it in dos? change drives on which to load win xp on? (C: to I: )

help? anyone? pweez? :(
First off, convert your I: drive from dynamic back to basic.
You don't boot to your restore partition - boot to C.

Let's go back to trying to install XP on your SATA disk. It should be possible to install XP on it, all you have to do is install the RAID drivers on a floppy when setup starts. When Windows tells you you can press F6 (while it's loading all the other drivers) do so. You should get a text menu with the drivers, if you choose the correct ones you should be able to pick it as a disk to install to. All this happens in the boot time setup procedure of Windows XP, which you access by booting from the Windows XP cd. Could you tell us if you get an error message (like the swap thing) while trying this ? Oh and you best do it without that ide drive connected, the easiest way is to unplug the 4 pin power plug from the drive.

well i have sort of tried it, i unplugged the ide hdd, and then tried loading win xp on to the sata hdd. i followed the same steps as i did when i was loading win xp on to the ide hdd, thru dos and all. well the problem is that the sata hdd asks for a swap file, but the ide didn't. but at teh same time, i havn't pressed f6 at teh setup, it never asked me too, but tomorrow hopefully, i'll take apart the comp, disconnect the ide hdd, and then try reinstalling win xp on the sata hdd. and keep on pressing f6 (or look for the directions at the bottom of the screen) during setup. btw, wht is the swap file? as i said ,the ide hdd didn't ask for it, but the sata does, why?
the easiest way is to unplug the 4 pin power plug from the drive.
You also need to remove the IDE cable, because if you don't, the POST process may hang trying to detect and identify a drive that's not powered up.

i do this after i convert it to a basic drive, rite? and then do i also have to create the partition? and if i do, how big does it have to be?

Forget about changing any partitions on the SATA disk, you're going to let Windows Setup handle that. You can see the F6 message on the bottom of the screen while Windows XP setup is loading its files, but IIRC it's not clear from the description that it also concerns SATA disks, which is why you probably didn't notice it. In any case, press F6 to get a little menu where you can chose your driver. I think the swap file mention comes from Windows setup, because it needs temporary hard disk space to install and if the IDE is disconnected and you failed to install SATA drivers with F6, it won't find any hard disk. Press F6 when you see any message about F6, but don't worry if it doesn't react immediately, it will have to load all its drivers before it will react to your F6 keypress.

98 boot disk in floppy, win xp pro cd in primary master (D:)
i have a win xp boot disk as well
first boot device set as floppy, second as cd rom, and third as C:
boot to dos using 98 boot disk
put in the xp boot disk
run smartdrv
changed to my cdrom directory (primary master, D:)
typed in 'cd \i386' enter and then typed in 'winnt' >>>>> got this error 'bad command or file name'
again: typed in 'cd \i386' enter and then typed in 'winnt' >>>>> WORKS
THESE ARE THE XP PRO SETUP WINDOWS

so. . . . .how do i do it while in windows? casue i don't think its' gonna work in dos. . .
Boot with the XP cd, then you will get the F6 prompt. Trying to boot with a 98 bootdisk and backdooring to the cd won't.

when i boot with the cd, it reads the cd, and then jus hangs there. . . . thas why i have been booting with a boot disk. . . . . is there any other way. . . .
If this is the computer in your sig, declock it to stock settings. NEVER attempt to install an operating system on an overclocked computer - if you must overclock, do it after everything is installed.

it's not overclocked, well it was, i went into bios and changed it. . . but never cleared the cmos. . . i jus did it, and gonna try it again. . . hopefully it'll work this time.
EDIT: same error, check under third window in the 16th post. . . it jus can't fine the harddrive, and it never asks for the drivers, sata drivers, at the bottom of the screen. . . . sigh. . . .

is there any way of installing win xp thru the windows interface? like, when one wants to reload an operating system, they jus put in the cd, and they go on from there, rite? is it possible i could do that and change the drives or something like that. . . . i havn't tried it yet because, i'll ahve to hook up my other IDE hdd, and to do that, i'll have to unhook everything, and rewire again. . . so many wires! lol

We can stay here, but we're going to have to start all over and concentrate on your windows xp cd not booting. This problem will have to be solved before you can install on the SATA disk, and besides that the fact that you cannot boot from the Windows XP cd may point to a hardware problem that you should take care of anyway. Mmmmmm, this thread is a bit full, maybe it would be better to start over, probably best in the Windows XP/2000 forum. I'll see you there tomorrow (if you create it), I'm going to catch some winks now :D
PS Don't worry we'll get to it eventually, we just have to start over
