Sloooow Ripping....why?!

I recently upgraded my computer. Pretty much everything is new besides my 2 CD Drives. I'm having problems with ripping from CD and also burning to CD.

I used to be able to burn CDs at 40x and rip a whole album in a few minutes. Now it's burning at something like 6x and is taking well over an hour to rip a single CD. What has gone wrong?

Did the drives possibly originally come with an install CD which had the neccessary bit n bobs for speedy reading/writing?

Here's my setup at the moment...

I'm using the onboard sound on my motherboard right now, would that have an effect? I've heard that the onboard sound is better than my old soundcard so I wouldnt have thought so?

The onboard sound would not affect the burning and ripping speed. What software are you using to burn and rip? If there are speed settings and it is set to "fastest" or something similar it will most likely go slow. I use Windows Media Player 9 to rip and burn. I have it set to do both at 24x. I can rip a CD in about 2 minutes and burn a CD in about 3.

How are your optical drives set up? Both CD and burner on the same IDE channel?

Are the jumpers set correctly for the type of IDE cable you're using? 80 wire IDE cable uses the CS jumper setting. 40 wire IDE cables use the master/slave jumper settings.

Is the motherboard chipset drivers installed?

Is DMA enabled for the IDE channel?

In Device Manager, do you have any yellow exclamation marks?

What brand and model are your CD and burner?

I'm using Nero for burning and Audiograbber for ripping.

Cricket, I can't answer all your questions as i'm not at my computer right now and won't be for another 2 weeks. I just wanted to get this sorted so I can fix it when I get back home.

The mobo drivers ARE installed. My DVD drive is by LG, CD-RW is by TEAC, can't tell you the models. No I do not have any exclamation marks.

I have no idea what DMA or IDE is! :p And the first 2 questions went completely over my head!

To see if DMA is enabled you have to go to the Device Manager and then IDE Devices. Assuming your optical drives are on the secondary IDE channel (they most likely are) right click, go to properties, advanced settings. If it isn't already, set both to "DMA if available".
