as above i can put any audio or data CD in the d: drive and the system will freeze after it fires up.
this is an old iwill mobo with a new creative 52x CDROM.
it has worked fine but after i downloaded a mobo driver it seems to have created the problem.
i downloaded the driver because i am trying to get the sound card to work.
i did delete the driver but how can i get the system back to original setup ie before i DLd the mobo driver.
this is a windows 98 SE system.

I'm not entirely sure if Windows 98SE has the System Restore feature, but if it has, use it to roll your system back to an earlier point in which you didn't have that driver installed.
You say you're trying to get your sound card to work. Have you made double sure that it is properly seated?

DBG 98 doesn't have system restore, only Me and XP. You could do a over the top install of windows, although I don't know how effective this would be.
No, 98 does not have system restore.
Exactly what motherboard driver did you install? What is the exact motherboard model?

driver I DLd:

i have a feeling it is the creative soundblaster 128 PCI drivers causing the problem.
there seems to be a conflict with certain CDROMS and i probly have the problem one.
I have another 5.1 soundcard by trust.if i remove the creative soundcard and put in the trust card ,how would i remove all the drivers i got for the SB128 souncard?.
they are here:

You could roll back your registry by using scanreg from the command prompt, this would have to be done at bootup as the windows executable varies from the DOS. After scanning, it should give you the option to roll back to previous backups (backups occur at the beggining of each windows session).

MTFR,
Sussed it.
this is an old board and i think one of the drivers i DLd switched the DMA on causing the CDROM to play up.
still cant get the creative SB 128 to work but the trust is so thats how i'm leaving it.
I'm gonna stop messing with anything more than 4 years old  ;) :)
